Two South Dakota authors are inviting women writers from across the region to connect, create, and build community at a series of upcoming literary events this summer and fall.
Myja Miller and Paula Miller, both local writers, will host the South Dakota Writer’s Retreat from August 6 to 9 in Chamberlain. The retreat is designed to give women authors a peaceful setting to develop their craft, build connections, and enjoy a supportive environment for creative work.
“The main focus is for writers to come together, stay together, network, and develop their craft,” said co-organizer Myja Miller.
The retreat will offer participants shared lodging, meals, quiet workspaces, roundtable discussions, evening campfire conversations, and self-care perks such as a complimentary gift bag and access to a massage therapist. A virtual guest speaker will also join the event.
Chamberlain was selected as the retreat location for its central position in the state and its tranquil setting along the Missouri River. “We stumbled upon this Airbnb cabin just outside of Chamberlain, and it was perfect,” said Myja.
This retreat, limited to 12 attendees, marks the first public event of its kind hosted by the Millers, who have previously led smaller gatherings among friends.
Following the retreat, the Millers will host their second annual South Dakota Literature & Lattes clean fiction event on September 5 and 6.
More than 50 authors from across the U.S. will gather in Sioux Falls, with events scheduled at the Sheraton Hotel on the first day and the Denny Sanford Premier Center on the second. The festival will include book signings, writing workshops, and a variety of food and coffee vendors.
“We’ve grown about two and a half times since last year,” said Paula Miller. “We had 29 booths in 2024, and this year we have 76.”
As part of their commitment to giving back, the Millers have selected TeenPact, a nonprofit that educates youth on civic engagement, as the event’s 2025 charitable partner. A silent auction will be held, with proceeds supporting both TeenPact and the event itself.
Last year’s event supported Bread Break, a Sioux Falls organization that provides food to local shelters.
The Literature & Lattes event is free and open to the public.
“God has really blessed us with this dream and vision,” said Myja. “We’re grateful it’s something meaningful for the community, and we’re also just excited for what it’s becoming.”
