Most former U.S. presidents turn to memoir writing after leaving office. Bill Clinton has already done that—and moved on. Now, he’s embracing fiction, returning to bookshelves with his third political thriller co-authored with bestselling writer James Patterson.
Their latest release, The First Gentleman, published by Little, Brown and Company, marks another collaboration between the former president and the prolific thriller author. Clinton, a longtime fan of the genre, says the real draw was the opportunity to work with Patterson.
In a recent interview with USA TODAY, the duo’s camaraderie is evident. They chat like longtime friends, with Clinton recounting a moment in Korea when he saw tourists reading his wife Hillary Clinton’s book. He also shares reading recommendations with Patterson, who praises Clinton’s voracious appetite for books.
“He reads everything,” Patterson remarks, noting their shared admiration for authors like S.A. Cosby, Michael Connelly, and Lee Child.
The First Gentleman centers on fictional President Wright, whose husband—once a star player for the New England Patriots—is put on trial for murder. The explosive accusation, uncovered by investigative journalist couple Brea and Garrett, threatens not only the integrity of the White House but also derails a crucial economic initiative dubbed the “Grand Bargain.”
The novel delivers fast-paced intrigue, political maneuvering, and a high body count, continuing the pair’s signature blend of suspense and insider access to Washington’s inner workings.
