A new handbook, Forever Families: The Highs and Lows of Modern-Day Adoption, offers an insightful and candid look into the adoption experience through the voices of those who live it every day.
Commissioned by the Berkshire-based charity Parenting Special Children (PSC), the book features 34 deeply personal stories authored by Shirley Anstis and Zobia Kalim. These narratives represent a wide spectrum of families, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of adoption.
The collection sheds light on adoptive parents’ journeys—from navigating the emotional and practical hurdles to securing essential support for their children. Central to these stories is the enduring love and resilience that unite these families.
The release comes at a critical moment, following the UK government’s announcement of substantial cuts to the Adoption Support Fund. Advocates warn that this reduction could limit access to vital therapeutic services, which many adopted children rely on.
“These are not just stories; they are real-life experiences shared with courage and honesty,” said Zobia Kalim, Trauma Service Manager at PSC. “This book gives a voice to those often unheard.”
Yuan Yang, Member of Parliament for Earley and Woodley, attended the book launch, underscoring the importance of supporting adoptive families during these challenging times.
