photo book highlighting key moments in the life of Chinese President Xi Jinping was featured in a sharing session at the 42nd Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair, held at the World Trade Center Kuala Lumpur.
The session focused on Xi Jinping Among the People: Moments in Focus, a collaborative publication between Guangxi Normal University Press (GNUP) and Xinhua Publishing House. Compiled by Xinhua News Agency and published in simplified Chinese, the book selects more than 60 photographs from the agency’s reporting series of the same name, offering an intimate look at President Xi’s interactions with the public.
Presented in chronological order, the book combines images and narrative text to reveal the personal stories behind each moment captured. The session was a key highlight of GNUP’s participation in the international literary event.
In her remarks, Cheng Lei, deputy editor-in-chief of GNUP, announced that the book is set to be translated into eight ASEAN languages later this year. She emphasized the aim of the session was to use the book’s emotive visuals and storytelling to foster deeper understanding and connection between Malaysian readers and China.
Basri Abdillah, a translation expert involved in the Malay edition, discussed the challenges and nuances of translating cultural context, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in conveying the book’s message while preserving its emotional and cultural resonance.
Ngui Yuen Fatt, general manager of KB Asia Sdn Bhd, offered a professional critique of the publication, highlighting its narrative approach and the value of such a work in promoting cross-cultural communication and understanding.
The Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair runs until early June and features participation from local and international publishers across various genres and languages.
